The Man Behind the Campaign

In 2018, at the age of 28, I walked away from a stable career as a Chartered Accountant to pursue a dream that made little practical sense, offshore sailing and, ultimately, solo ocean racing.

With no direct pathway, I started at the bottom, completing a Yachtmaster Offshore course and progressing through yacht deliveries, instructing, and further qualifications. Over time, persistence carried me forward to eventually captaining superyachts, yet the deeper ambition of solo offshore racing remained unfinished.

In 2021, an accident brought that journey close to ending when I faced the very real possibility of having my right foot amputated after an accident at sea. The recovery was long, uncertain, and mentally confronting. Choosing to return to sailing was out of the question for many, but the only option for me. It was not about proving toughness, but about refusing to let circumstance redefine me and what was possible.

My entry into the Global Solo Challenge 2027 now represents the culmination of my own journey, and, more importantly, an opportunity to raise money for a cause greater than any individual. It also offers the chance to attempt something historically significant in Irish Maritime History.

This is not just a race campaign. It is a story about reinvention, resilience, and the pursuit of unfinished dreams, not just my dreams, but the dreams of people who have had their futures taken from them through Parkinson's Disease. I will be sailing for these individuals and their families, and this is the biggest motivator of all.

The Cause

Why Parkinson's?

"Parkinson's is invisible to most people until it touches your life. When it touched mine, I knew I had to do something. I can't cure it. I can't reverse it. But I can sail, and I can use that to make people pay attention."

The Global Solo Challenge gives Karl a global stage. Every media mention, every social post, every sponsor conversation is an opportunity to put Parkinson's in front of people who might otherwise never think about it. That's the mission.
